Ouch [Mar. 19th, 2003|03:33 pm]

Just had another reminder of why I hate pot-holes

I was cycling home for lunch. Had been going quite fast down St Giles, so was still braking as I turned into Little Clarindon Street. Didn't seem to be the usual gaggle of pedestrians standing in the way, so I wasn't worrying too much about my speed.

Then, coming further round, I spotted a cyclist coming at a fair speed the other way along the road, who'd just pulled out to avoid a pot hole.

I decided not to scare him by getting stupidly close (as I would've done if neither of us had done anything), so I turned a little bit harder, so we'd pass by a large margin.

Around the point that I turned that bit more, while still breaking, I hit a small pot hole.

Next moment, I'm lying on the road, my bike just behind me. Doh!

So, I now have some impressive grazes on my left elbow, which align themselves nicely with where I generally rest my arms when typing, grr. Also have a few other smaller grazes, which are going to make the swim fitness training session tonight, well, interesting...

Such is the price you pay for cycling at speed in Oxford I guess

In other news, I'm really loving Opera 6.12 for Linux. The anti aliased text has grown on me, and I now like it. I've also figured out how to re-tweak the fonts, so I can ensure they look sensible. Oh, and I've installed it in labs, and it's soooo much faster than Mozilla :-)

Re: Ouch

What you have to realise is that the author of the comment is a very angry young man. I'm sure he didnt mean for you to take offence, he often falls from his bike and was indicating the fact that no one cares about his injuries anymore, cause he has so many. Anyway I see you started updating your website, maybe because of it. I feel it looks better, the navigation is right handed which is somewhat unique, which is why i like it :>

Re: Ouch

It is very true :( i am not good on a bike. Tho i do not take kindly to being called a "compsci's" its another sore point that i wont go into! The nav bar i agree is very unique.

ps. Quailty photo of a rope throw on the front page, must have been a pro who took that :)

Re: Ouch

Falling of bikes is never good, no matter how often it happens...

As for the website, it was more a "hmm, really ought to launch the new testing version of the site", followed by a few quick tweaks and putting it live. The Nav bar on the right isn't that original now, is it? Almost the same code as the
Uni Lifesaving page. Ahh, the joys of doing several sites on the same server :-)

Big question though - do you use a sensible browser where the nav bar floats about, or a broken one where it stays put?
