Looking for an airport express type thing [Aug. 29th, 2004|07:25 pm]
Nick
In our new house, we've got two stereos and two computers. Neither stereo is in the same room as the two computers, so we can't listen to radio 4 listen again or mp3s on them. (One stereo is in the main bedroom, the other is in the kitchen. Both computers live upstairs in the second bedroom).

Some investigation has shown that running audio cable from the back of the second bedroom to the back of the main bedroom it probably going to be too hard to have looking nice, and will probably take a toll on the audio quality (since I doubt I'll stretch to cables nice enough to avoid that...)

The solution seems to be buying something a bit like an airport express. If I used apple kit, it would be a no brainer. However, I use linux, so things don't seem as clear cut.

Here's where I need advice - do I buy an airport express, and hack something up with vlc + things from DVD Jon (this)? Do I find something similar from another manufacturer that accepts mp3s or uncompressed wave files (and if so, what)? Thoughts?

Squeeze

Sounds like you want one of these:

You must have seen the one here at some point - they really are very good. Let me know if you want more specifics.

Re: Squeeze

If it wasn't for the cost, I'd have bought one of those already :)

Alas, the wireless ones are more than twice the price of an airport express. They are very nice though....

Re: Squeeze

Are you looking at the Dabs prices?

189inc vat for wireless, 135 for wired.

Alternatively an extreamer (http://www.laser.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=250) but they are looking quite pricey now.

Re: Squeeze

That's still looking at more than the airport exress ($120, around £80-90 where you can get them here)

The extreamer at 100 looks more possible. They all do more than I need them to though, so I'm hoping I can get something a bit cheaper by getting something simpler.
