One of the bits I've already read is all about bread. I now know about the Chorleywood process, and hence why most of the bread sold in the UK isn't as tasty or healthy as it might be. (Short answer - relates to how the flour is milled, and the crap they throw in with it to get the bread to rise+bake in no time at all)
So, last week I headed to a health food shop in Witney, and bought some stone ground wholemeal flour (much better than mill ground flour, since it's a gentler process and less denaturing occurs). Hilary made some very nice bread with it, but it took an age to make.
Based on the success of this, the use of Simon's bread machine last year, and a lack of time, we decided to go and buy ourselves a bread maker today. We've settled on one with dedicated programs for wholewheat bread and french style bread (to go with the french bread flour bought from Palm's in the Covered Market), so we have high hopes. I'll report back in a few weeks on how it's done, and if good, tell you exactly what one we bought.
In other food related news, our smoothy habit is progressing well. We've mostly got the quantities right (one tray of ice, add inch sized lumps of 2 or 3 different kinds fruit up to the 750ml mark, then add juice to 800ml or milk to 750ml and smoothy for 1 minute, produces just shy of 2 pints), and we're probably having 4-5 a week. We've also discovered that by buying quite a lot of whatever fruit is on offer, we don't have to spend very much on doing them. The trick is to have enough space to store the fruit while it ripens, or go to the grocers in the covered market and by ripe fruit. It's probably also a great way to have 2-3 portions of "fruit/veg" in one easy and nice tasting go.
