Server Virus Checkers - how hard can it be? [May. 26th, 2004|12:37 pm]
[mood |annoyedannoyed]

Why is it soooo hard to buy virus checkers for your windows servers?

When you go to the norton site, or the mcafee site, there is no mention of server versions. Home and Professional seem to be the options, and professional seems to be the one to get. Only after looking very hard (in the case of McAfee, downloading a PDF) do you spot that none of these products will install on 2000 server or 2003 server, bah.

So, off you go to google, in the hope of finding the right site. This doesn't work either. So, you go to the parent company sites, and look at their offerings. Again, it's very hard - they keep offering bundle packs (server + n workstations). Nothing for just servers to be found.

Is this that hard a concept? I have a bunch of windows servers colocated that I (well, my company) manage for customers, that we need to virus protect. We want a virus scanner for that machine only, not any workstations. These are web servers, they don't have matching workstations!

After about 30 minutes of fighting with the McAfee/NAI site, and the Norton/Symantec site, I still can't see the "virus scanner for 1 server" product. Proland will quite happily sell me just such a beast, and have an easy to use website, so I might just use them instead (already use their workstation product on one machine which Norton broke, but that's another rant....)

you need the gateway edition

norton corporate edition installs on a server, and allows for clients to be installed on client machines which all use the central server for stuff like liveupdate, the virus defs, etc. from what i understand you don't want this, but just a standalone virus checker on a server. if this is the case you need symantec antivirus gateway edition. http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=142&EID=0

Re: you need the gateway edition

Thanks for the pointer. Looked ideal, right up until I saw the "minimum number of licenses: 10" when I went to try buying it... bah!
