Getting rid of login backgrounds with Remote Desktop connections |

Most of the windows machines we've bought recently have been from Dell, and have come pre-installed with Windows 2003. Dell do quite an annoying thing - they set a background that's displayed on the login screen.
This screen gets displayed on normal logins, and on remote desktop logins. Downloading the dell server logo (in high resolution, high colour depth) is a bit to a lot of a pain, depending on your bandwidth at the time.... Disabling the normal desktop background doesn't work, the dell one still pops up at login time.
Today, I find the solution: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper . If you set this to an empty value (instead of the path to the silly dell image), then you won't get it any more. Instead, you just get the plain grey background, that takes no time at all to download.
If you fancy setting the background colour of the login screen, you can do that from HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors\Background, by setting RGB values. If you stuff that up, the default windows grey seems to be "102 111 116" |
