Triathlons [Aug. 11th, 2005|11:09 pm]
Nick
Hilary has rather foolishly decided to enter a triathlon at the start of September. This means lots of training. The training plan for the weekends involves a long cycle ride, which is where I get dragged in.

Last weekend, we took the train to Banbury and then down to Princes Risborough. After looking at beds (don't ask), we jumped on our bikes. There's a swanky new cycle route (The Phoenix Way) to Thame, along the old railway, so we zipped along. It's a really nice route.

After a spot of lunch in Thame, we had the less fun bit along an A road back to Wheatly. From there it was nice country lanes to Horsepath, then cycle routes back home. All in all, it was about 22 miles.

It didn't take us as long as we expected, and was a very nice route (apart from the A road). Once they finish extending the Phoenix trail, it'll be even better. Apart from being shattered afterwards, it was a nice way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon.

This weekend, we're venturing a bit further afield. We're planning to get the train to Goring and Streatly. From there, there's a cycle route to Wallingford, another to Didcot, yet another to Abingdon, then to Radley, and finally up the tow path back to Iffley. As long as the weather holds, should be another nice ride!

Wow - good for her! And apparently, good for you, too. Whether you like it or not ;)

Far too energetic (says the man who's been running 4 miles every day)! Do you both have racing bikes now?

Kinda. We both have old racing bikes that have been recently serviced. We tend to use them as speedy town bikes, but they just about manage as racing bikes for less serious events!

Well if you need to get new ones I'm sure I could do you a deal ;)

There's actually a scheme where you can buy your new bike through work for commuting, and get it tax free. It's tempting to do, but I'm not sure I can quite justify a new bike, despite the discount!
